OpenAI said on Nov. 4 that it has agreed to acquire Pierre Computer Company, a developer-tools startup whose open-source libraries already handle file browsing and code review inside OpenAI's Codex app.

Neither company disclosed a price. The deal still has to clear customary conditions, including regulatory approval, and the two companies will run separately until it closes. OpenAI gave no closing date.

Pierre's main product is Code Storage, a Git-based service that lets software store code and track its history. It also builds open-source tools for reading and reviewing code. Trees lets users move quickly through a project's files. Diffs shows what changed and is built to handle large amounts of code, and its edit mode lets a reviewer fix a line on the spot. Highlights, a newer release, colors code syntax as a developer types or as an agent writes code.

Codex already uses Trees and Diffs, and OpenAI said the purchase will add to the tools Codex has for writing, understanding and reviewing code. The company said it wants to build on the Git workflows developers already use and adapt them for teams that work with coding agents, from the first branch an agent opens to deployment.

The deal follows OpenAI's announcement earlier in the week that it is scaling Git inside the company with Pando, its in-house source-control system for engineers and agents.

Pierre's open-source projects will stay open, and OpenAI said it will keep contributing to them. Code Storage customers can keep using the service after the deal closes while OpenAI works to fold its features into Codex.

The announcement did not give Pierre's headcount or funding history.
