AWS opens Interconnect last-mile preview with Equinix

Amazon Web Services on Nov. 4 opened a preview of AWS Interconnect - last mile with Equinix. Customers can now order managed private links into AWS from any of Equinix's 282 data centers without ordering cross-connects or configuring routers.

The service covers the last hop between a customer's colocation space or campus and AWS Direct Connect. In the AWS console, a customer picks a Region, a speed, a Direct Connect gateway and an Equinix Fabric One project ID. AWS then issues an activation key, which the customer enters in Equinix's Fabric One portal to finish the setup. Orders can also start on the Equinix side.

During the preview, 1 Gbps connections are free into the US West (N. California) Region through San Jose and the US East (N. Virginia) Region through Northern Virginia. AWS says speeds will run from 1 Gbps to 100 Gbps once the Equinix option is generally available. It gave no date for that.

AWS and Equinix build the capacity ahead of time, with four separate links across two locations, and handle the routing setup for the customer. AWS says every connection carries a 99.99% availability guarantee. Traffic between AWS and Equinix edge equipment is encrypted by default.

For operators already on Equinix, the change is mainly in how they order. A cross-connect order and router setup are replaced by an activation key passed between two portals.

On Nov. 5, AWS added a new Interconnect - last mile metro in Northern Virginia, joining New York. Through that metro, Lumen customers anywhere in the continental United States can order connections to every public AWS Region outside China and to AWS Local Zones. Megaport and Equinix remain in preview there. The Northern Virginia option uses the same four-link, two-site design and the same 99.99% guarantee.

Customers can set up connections through the console, the AWS command-line tool or the API. AWS has published an open API package on GitHub for network partners that want to plug in.
